This particular section of the Old Testament is not just unlikely but in the case of the ark impossible.
The idea is unbelievably cruel, it was genocide on a mass scale little 3yr old girls, babies, billions of animals all killed. So why given the problem he was facing didn’t the all powerful God who created all of existence in 6 days just click his fingers and dispose of all the bad people rather than killing billions of animals and innocents?
Does anyone considering our knowledge of the world today believe Noah could, in a short period, collect pairs of all animals and birds roughly 5 million different species (if you include extinct animals billions) from all over the world, without the benefit of modern air transport? Not to mention animals not know to science such as Unicorns as mentioned in the bible. And that following the flood all these animals had to migrate, back pretty sharpish to their present habitats. Crossing oceans and continents the Earth could not have been more than a few hundred miles across, more than likely flat, and with no oceans to cross.
What of the Egyptians who continued building their civilization and constructing monuments, and didn't seem to notice of the worldwide flood, which caused their civilisation to be drowned. Creationists estimate that the flood took place about 4000-5000 years before present, which was the height of the Egyptian civilization. The Egyptian history stretches back to about 8000 BCE. The history, that is, that was written down at the time, stretches from 3500 BCE listing all the events that occurred during these periods. And whilst Egyptian history was unfolding the whole world was engulfed in a flood that scoured the land clean. And in Egypt, nobody noticed or maybe it wasn’t important enough to mention.
The flood story however does appear in over 500 cultures and although a flood which engulfed the whole world did not occur, a flood did.
At the end of the last ice age, the temprature rose and there where rises in sea level due to the melting ice caps. This caused an area called the Tigris-Eupherates Delta to disappear under the Persian Gulf. An area nearby that in which the bible was written and would at that time of seemed like an act of god.
Due to this sudden shortage of land people were forced to turn to farming rather than hunting for the first time so it's not all bad news.
Evidence of this rise in sea level can be witnessed in the fact that Aboriginies, whose culture reaches back to the last ice age, before the meltdown; can still name and locate now submerged mountains which have been under the sea for 8,000 years since the end of the last ice age.
This perfectly scientific explanation for societies have flood-myths, removes the creationists assertion that many societies have these myths as noahs flood as described in the Bible occured, a replaces it as with many parts of the Mythical Bible with fact.
